‘The place I wanted to be:’ Syracuse transfer Tyler Betsey opens up about why he chose BYU

Betsey discussed his commitment to the Cougars while appearing on ‘BYU Sports Nation’ earlier this week.

When Syracuse sharpshooter Tyler Betsey entered the transfer portal, he knew exactly what he was looking for: a program with NBA pedigree, elite coaching, and a chance to prove himself on a big stage. He found all that and more at BYU.

The 6-foot-8 power forward officially announced his commitment to the Cougars on April 13, bringing a deadly 3-point stroke to Provo that could transform BYU's offense. In ACC play last season, Betsey knocked down an impressive 44% of his triples—good for fourth best in one of college basketball's toughest conferences. That's exactly the kind of perimeter firepower the Cougars need after struggling to connect from deep this past year.

Appearing on "BYU Sports Nation" earlier this week, Betsey opened up about his journey from Syracuse to Provo. "My coach from Syracuse, he got fired," Betsey explained. "Once it happened, you just sit there and wait to see what's happening with the new coach. I knew I was going to enter the portal just to see what was out there."

But when BYU entered the picture, everything changed. "When my agent told me that was a possibility, that was something I knew I wanted to explore further," he said. "Once I talked to the coaches, I just knew that was the place I wanted to be."

What sealed the deal? The Cougars' growing reputation as an NBA pipeline. Under head coach Kevin Young, BYU has become a destination for players with professional aspirations. "There's just a short list of schools in the country with NBA pedigree, and that's where I want to go," Betsey said. "In the last two years, AJ (Dybantsa) is almost in the league and then Egor Dëmin was a first-round pick. It's just a place that's going to have NBA players, the eyes that it puts on. That's just a place that I want to be a part of."

Betsey, who will arrive on campus in early June, also shared the mentality that made him such a dangerous shooter. "There's a lot of ups and downs, and you can't get caught up in the downs," he said. "You can't let one game affect another game; you've just got to keep on moving and keep on pushing."

He also admitted being blown away by the atmosphere at the Marriott Center. "I remember we walked into the arena for a shootaround, and I was just shocked about how big the arena is—and then coming out for the layup lines, because the fans were there."

For BYU fans looking to rep their new sharpshooter, now's the perfect time to gear up for what promises to be an exciting season. Betsey's combination of elite shooting, NBA ambition, and resilience could be exactly what the Cougars need to make a deep run.
