In a thrilling turn of events, Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland revealed that a pivotal halftime adjustment sparked his team's remarkable comeback against Rangers, a moment that could reshape the title race.
With Rangers dominating the first half and holding a 1-0 lead, Hearts head coach Derek McInnes made a bold move at the break, introducing Blair Spittal. This tactical shift opened up space for Hearts' strikers, allowing them to press higher and disrupt Rangers' rhythm. Shankland, a key figure in the squad, felt the momentum shift almost immediately.
"The first half became difficult," Shankland told BBC Scotland. "Rangers got their goal and gained confidence, which caused us a lot of problems. We couldn't get our press right at the top end of the pitch, and they were picking us off pretty easily. So we were just glad to get in at halftime with it only being 1-0."
The introduction of Spittal proved to be a game-changer. "It sorted the middle of the pitch for us. It allowed us to get a press at the top, and I think that changed the game," Shankland explained. "We started to nick things at that end of the pitch, and eventually, you feel the momentum coming when you get the equaliser. It felt as if we were going to beat them and get the next one."
Hearts' victory now puts them seven points clear of Rangers with just three games remaining, tightening the grip on their pursuit of the title. However, Shankland remained cautious about declaring the race over. "Not mathematically—Rangers are still in it," he said. "But it's going to be difficult for them. There's no denying that. When you only have three games left, it's going to be tough for them to get back. But I'm sure they'll believe until it's mathematically impossible."
Looking ahead, Shankland emphasized the need to stay focused. "We just need to concentrate on Motherwell—another difficult game against a team that's got a lot of praise this season for the way they do things. We'll prepare well and look to go there and get a result."
For fans of the beautiful game, this comeback serves as a reminder of how crucial tactical adjustments can be—and how one halftime decision can turn the tide in a season-defining clash.
