With just over a month to go until the World Cup, injury concerns are mounting, and several South American stars have already been ruled out of the tournament. Here's a look at five key players who won't be taking the field.

Brazil has been hit particularly hard. Real Madrid's prolific forward suffered a meniscus tear on March 2, and it's now confirmed he won't recover in time for the World Cup. Another blow for the Seleção comes from the loss of the Real Madrid center-back, who was expected to anchor the defense alongside Marquinhos. A recurrence of his biceps femoris injury will sideline him for five months.

Argentina will also feel a major absence. The Racing Strasbourg forward tore his cruciate ligament and has already undergone surgery. Manager Lionel Scaloni, visibly emotional, has officially ruled him out.

Colombia's hopes took a hit on May 4 when their star player was stretchered off during a match for Club América in Mexico. The diagnosis: a medial collateral ligament tear in his right knee. Colombian media reports confirm he's been ruled out of the World Cup.

Uruguay will miss their Palmeiras full-back, who suffered torn ligaments in his right ankle during a recent friendly between England and Uruguay. With a recovery timeline of four to six months, manager Marcelo Bielsa has definitively ruled him out.

Beyond these confirmed absences, several stars are doubtful. Estevao is battling a serious muscle injury and won't be available for the group stage, though Carlo Ancelotti hasn't completely ruled him out yet. De Arrascaeta fractured his collarbone on April 30, and his status remains uncertain. Tottenham's Cuti Romero is also questionable after spraining the collateral ligament in his right knee.

As the World Cup approaches, these injuries serve as a stark reminder of the fine line between glory and heartbreak in football. Stay tuned for further updates as teams finalize their rosters.
