The Texas Longhorns have secured a significant defensive addition for their backcourt. Tennessee transfer guard Amari Evans has committed to head coach Sean Miller's program via the NCAA Transfer Portal, bringing a coveted blend of size and defensive tenacity to Austin.
Evans, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound guard with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, arrives with three seasons of eligibility remaining. A former four-star prospect ranked No. 70 nationally out of Overtime Elite in Atlanta, he was originally signed by former Texas coach Rick Barnes at Tennessee, giving him valuable SEC experience from day one.
His defensive prowess is his calling card. As a freshman for the Volunteers, Evans earned trust by consistently guarding the opponent's top wing, finishing third on the team with 34 steals. He also flashed offensive potential, most notably dropping a career-high 24 points in the regular-season finale against Vanderbilt.
Coach Miller got a firsthand look at Evans this past season when Texas visited Knoxville. While the Vols secured the win, Evans logged 23 minutes of action, showcasing the defensive intensity that made him a target in the portal. This commitment marks another key building block for Miller as he shapes his roster for the future, adding a proven, high-major defender to the Longhorns' lineup.
