Knowing how to hit a punch out will help you keep the big numbers off of your scorecard.

Every golfer dreams of striping drives down the middle and firing at every pin, but the reality of the game is different. Even the world's best, like Rory McIlroy during his 2026 Masters victory, find themselves navigating trouble. The true mark of a savvy player isn't a flawless card, but the ability to limit the damage. That's where the essential punch shot comes in—a low, controlled escape that can save your round from a big number.

Mastering this shot starts with club selection. As Golf Digest Top 50 Teacher Erika Larkin advises, choose a club that flights the ball down while providing the ideal mix of carry and roll to find safety. A general rule: the lower you need to hit it, the less loft you should use.

Setup is crucial for creating that penetrating ball flight. Larkin recommends playing the ball back in your stance, toward your trail foot for right-handed golfers. This de-lofts the club at impact. To counter the in-to-out swing path this creates, slightly open your stance by aiming your feet left of the target.

Weight distribution is key. From the start, feel pressure on your front leg and keep your chest leaning toward the target. Maintain this forward weight throughout the swing to promote a downward strike, which keeps the ball from ballooning up.

Your backswing will often be dictated by your surroundings—tree branches may force a shorter takeaway. On the through swing, focus on a low, abbreviated finish, keeping the clubhead around hip height. This "low and slow" follow-through is the final piece for ensuring the ball stays under the wind and branches, running you safely back into play and setting up your next shot.
