The District Court of Johnson County, Kansas, has officially dismissed the case against Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, bringing a swift resolution to a legal matter that had cast a shadow over the team's offseason preparations.
Merritt, 54, was arrested on April 22 and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, accused of causing bodily harm to his daughter. However, after a more thorough review of the evidence, the district attorney's office agreed to drop the case entirely.
"The DA’s office looked at it a little more thoroughly and reviewed some additional information," Merritt's attorney, Ryan Ginie, told NFL Media's Mike Garafolo, "and agreed it was a matter that should be dismissed."
The development comes as a relief for the Chiefs, who had taken a cautious approach while the legal process unfolded. Head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation just last weekend, emphasizing the team's commitment to letting law enforcement handle the matter.
"Dave’s been very up front with everything," Reid said via Arrowhead Pride. "We’re still going through that whole procedure. In this case, you always let the law enforcement part take care of itself and work its way out. And so that’s where we’re at right now, but we’re aware, and we’ve had communication with both sides there, with the law enforcement side and Dave."
Merritt has been a key figure in Kansas City's defensive backfield since joining the coaching staff in 2019, helping develop a secondary that has been instrumental in the team's sustained success. Prior to his tenure with the Chiefs, he gained valuable experience coaching with the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Jets, building a reputation as a respected defensive mind across the league.
With the legal matter now resolved, all eyes will turn to how the Chiefs proceed with Merritt's role on the coaching staff as they gear up for the upcoming season.
