The stars have aligned for Kentucky Christian University's softball Knights, and they're setting their sights on the Lone Star State. Riding a wave of momentum with 11 wins in their last 14 games, KCU has punched their ticket to the NCCAA World Series, which kicks off Monday in Grapevine, Texas.
Head coach Mark Ritchhart, in his third year at the helm, watched his team load up the bus for a pre-dawn departure Friday—a journey that marks the second time he's led the Knights this deep into the postseason. Last year in Kansas City, KCU went 1-2 in the double-elimination format, but this squad is hungry for more.
The path to Texas wasn't easy. KCU powered through the Mideast Regional, defeating Grace Christian twice and Alice Lloyd twice to claim the crown. In the championship thriller against Alice Lloyd, the Knights showed their grit. Trailing late, Hannah Melton delivered a game-tying single in the seventh inning to plate Rebecca Engler and force extras. Then, in the eighth, with Engler and Alyna Ruiz on base, Melton ripped a two-run single to center field, lifting KCU to a 4-2 victory. Melton finished with three RBIs, while Engler crossed the plate three times.
In the circle, Sara Bays and Abby McPherson combined for eight innings of work, allowing just two runs and striking out four. The duo has been a force all season, combining for 22 wins—McPherson with 12 and Bays with 10. Bays, a Boyd County graduate, and McPherson are part of a trio of transfers who joined the program within a four-day span, along with Kendra Jennings, who has made 18 appearances this season. Ritchhart, who calls the pitches, keeps it simple: "The best pitch they can throw is the one they believe in the most."
At the plate, freshman third baseman Ariana Adams has been a revelation, leading the Knights with a .401 batting average, seven home runs, and 50 RBIs. "She's been a really good leader as a freshman," Ritchhart said. "She wants to win. She's a hard worker with a great personality, and she's even given pep talks. Her desire to win is hard to find." Adams' defense has been equally impressive, with two game-saving plays in the regional championship.
The Knights also lean on their two seniors, Ruiz and Alexis Holleman. Holleman, who bats .391, leads the team with 20 stolen bases and 22 walks, while Ruiz hits .376. Rebecca Engler and Kylie Mathes are tied for second on the team with 37 RBIs apiece.
As the Knights prepare to take the field in Texas, Ritchhart is grateful for the journey. "I'm so thankful for the girls to get this opportunity. We've had ups and downs, but it's always been a great group. I'm grateful we could finish strong." With a well-rounded roster and a team that believes in each other, KCU is ready to make some noise in the Lone Star State.
