Spring is in full swing, and for Penn State lacrosse, it's been a season defined by agonizingly close calls. Both the men's and women's teams suffered tough losses this past weekend, leaving their postseason hopes hanging in the balance as the regular season reaches its climax.
The men's team experienced a heartbreaking Senior Day, letting a late lead slip away in a 9-8 defeat to Michigan. After building an 8-6 advantage in the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions surrendered the final three goals of the game. Standouts Hunter Aquino and Luke Walstrum each netted two goals, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.
This pattern has become all too familiar for the squad. Remarkably, all five of their losses this season have been by just one or two goals. Despite a strong +37 goal differential and two impressive wins over top-10 RPI teams, these narrow defeats have them squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Their entire season now comes down to a must-win road game against Rutgers tonight.
On the women's side, the story was similarly frustrating. The team fell 17-12 to a powerful Northwestern squad, undone by a 10-4 deficit in the middle quarters. Kelly MacKinney and Delaney Radin provided offensive firepower with hat tricks, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
The weekend's pain was compounded by a crushing overtime loss to Johns Hopkins. Penn State controlled regulation, never trailing and even holding a two-goal lead late in the fourth quarter. However, a late surge from the Blue Jays forced overtime, where they snatched a 10-9 victory. Like their male counterparts, the women's team also faces a critical season finale against Rutgers tomorrow.
In brighter spring sports news, the men's volleyball team continues to dominate EIVA conference play. They remained unbeaten with a pair of hard-fought 3-2 victories over Sacred Heart. Defense led the way in the first match, with Owen Rose racking up an impressive 11 blocks. The offense took over in the second, powered by 19-kill performances from Tristan Hassell and Sean Harvey. They look to close out a strong regular season with two home games against George Mason.
For the softball team, it was a weekend to forget, as they were swept by Northwestern in a lopsided series. The team did bounce back with an 11-3 win over Bucknell, but the damage to their NCAA Tournament resume was likely done. They'll look to regroup on the road against Ohio State this weekend.
As these teams battle through the pressures of the postseason push, every play, every goal, and every out matters. It's the kind of high-stakes spring drama that defines college athletics.
