In a move that brings stability and familiarity to the sidelines, South Pontotoc has promoted offensive coordinator Jonathan Beard to head coach for the upcoming season. Beard steps into the role following Brandon Cutrer's challenging 1-9 campaign, which marked his only year at the helm.
"Pretty excited about it," Beard said. "Been here for a year calling plays as the offensive coordinator and whatnot. Just excited about the opportunity I have moving forward as the head coach."
Beard becomes the third head coach in as many years for the Cougars, but his prior experience within the program could be the key to turning things around. Having already built strong relationships with players during his tenure as offensive coordinator, Beard is confident that continuity will help minimize the disruption often caused by coaching changes.
"I think it's really important," Beard explained. "I've already been here for a year and established relationships with these guys. I've been in Pontotoc County for about 11 years now, kind of just feels like home. It's extremely important to have these good relationships with these guys and that established relationship. We can keep moving forward with what we've already established as a coaching staff from previous years."
The Cougars' 2023 season started promisingly enough at 1-3, but a six-game losing streak to close out the year—during which they were outscored 327-65—highlighted the work ahead. However, Beard's emphasis on grit and teamwork has already begun to reshape the program's culture.
"Just working hard," Beard said. "We have bought into just really working our tails off and taking care of business and looking at things from different perspectives. Just kind of learning what it means to grind and have confidence in what we do and in each other I think has been a big focus for us this offseason. I think it's working out so far. I think the kids have really bought into what we're doing and what we're preaching here. It's been a really exciting offseason just to watch the kids grow and mature."
For a program searching for its footing, Beard's promotion offers a blend of local roots and fresh energy. As the Cougars prepare for the new season, fans can take heart in knowing that their head coach isn't just a new face—he's one who already knows the playbook and the players, and is ready to lead them back to contention.
