Sophie Cunningham has never been one to hold back, and her latest jab at the WNBA is proof that some rivalries never really cool off—especially when they involve the officials.
Ahead of the 2026 season opener, the Indiana Fever guard took a playful—but pointed—shot at the league after officials publicly admitted that officiating needed improvement. With the Fever set to tip off against the Dallas Wings and rookie sensation Paige Bueckers, Cunningham joked that the WNBA might actually owe her a refund.
"If they're admitting they need to get better, then where's my money back?" she said with a laugh during a recent episode of her podcast, "Show Me Something." It was a funny moment, but for those who followed her 2025 season, it carried a familiar edge.
Cunningham's first year in Indiana was electric—her gritty play, fearless attitude, and unfiltered personality made her a fan favorite. But it also put her at the center of several high-profile clashes with the league's officiating crew. She was fined three times over the course of the season.
The first incident came during a heated June matchup against the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected after an altercation involving Jacy Sheldon. The tension didn't stop there.
In July, she was fined again after posting a video on TikTok criticizing WNBA officiating. Then, in August, the league handed her a $1,500 fine for comments made on her podcast, where she openly questioned the consistency of calls made against the Fever throughout the season.
"I'm not saying your job is easy," Cunningham said at the time. "But when it's a simple call in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing?"
That quote quickly went viral among WNBA fans, many of whom already believed that officiating around Indiana had become one of the biggest storylines of the 2025 season. Now, with the league itself acknowledging room for improvement, Cunningham's playful demand for a refund feels less like a joke and more like a mic drop.
Whether the WNBA cuts her a check or not, one thing is clear: Sophie Cunningham isn't backing down—and she's ready to make some noise again in 2026.
