KENNESAW, Ga. — With college athletes having so much more freedom these days to make money off their sport and transfer without penalty, how do programs based on old-school, traditional values survive? Jacksonville State softball seems to make it work as well as anyone. In Julie Boland's first season as head coach last year, the Gamecocks won 37 games — their most in eight years. This year, ...

In an era of college sports defined by the transfer portal and NIL deals, where athletes have unprecedented freedom to chase opportunities, how does a program built on old-school values not just survive, but thrive? The answer might be found in Kennesaw, Georgia, this past weekend, where the Jacksonville State softball team showcased a blueprint for success that goes beyond facilities and flash.

Under second-year head coach Julie Boland, the Gamecocks are having a sensational season. With about four weeks remaining, they've already notched 32 wins, building on last year's 37-victory campaign—their best in eight years. More impressively, they are dominating Conference USA, holding a commanding 16-2 league record and a three-game lead over preseason favorite Liberty.

What makes this run remarkable is how they're doing it. Jax State doesn't boast the conference's best facilities or the deepest pockets for recruiting top talent. Yet, in an age of constant roster movement, only three players have transferred out in the past two years. A staggering 18 of the 22 players on the current roster are homegrown talent who joined straight out of high school, the most in CUSA.

This culture of retention is no accident; it's a decades-long tradition. Over the past 30 years, Jax State has claimed 10 regular-season conference championships and eight tournament titles, a legacy built on stability and commitment.

So, what's the secret? An inside look during a recent road trip revealed a program where culture is the cornerstone. Coach Boland, continuing the open-door policy of her predecessor Jana McGinnis, offered a rare glimpse into the team's inner workings. The atmosphere is a deliberate blend of calm, business-like focus and genuine camaraderie.

Boland's philosophy is holistic: challenge players on and off the field, build young women prepared for life after softball, and foster a genuine love for the program and each other. It's a culture that asks for buy-in, and in return, it builds loyalty. In today's transactional sports landscape, Jacksonville State softball proves that building a family—a team that sticks together through thick and thin—can still be the most powerful play in the book.
