Softball: Fast start fueled by chemistry has Badin eyeing big season

HAMILTON — The early signs are familiar. So is the standard. Nearly a decade after one of the most dominant starts in program history, the Badin High School softball team is again setting the pace — and doing it with a different kind of edge. The Rams are 8-0, their best start since the 2017 team opened 14-0 and finished 26-3 before falling to Springfield Northwestern in a regional semifinal. ...

The Badin High School softball team is off to a blazing 8-0 start, their best opening run since the powerhouse 2017 squad began 14-0. But while the record echoes past success, this year's Rams are building their dominance on a new foundation: undeniable team chemistry.

Following a first-round tournament exit last season, head coach Greg Stitzel focused the offseason on reshaping the team's identity. The result is a tightly-knit group where connection fuels performance. "It’s just like everybody’s got everybody’s back," Stitzel said, highlighting the infectious dugout energy as the team's driving force.

That bond has translated into explosive production on the field. The Rams have outscored opponents 85-13, powered by a lineup hitting a staggering .447 as a team. Standouts like sophomore Kendall Ponatoski (.636, 4 HR, 17 RBI) and junior Jessie Giuliano (.519) headline a deep and relentless offensive attack.

Balance is key to any championship contender, and Badin has it. In the circle, junior Phebe Kiefer has been nearly untouchable, posting a 7-0 record with a 1.11 ERA and 57 strikeouts, giving the Rams a shutdown arm to match their potent bats.

The team's unselfish spirit was on full display in a recent 10-0 victory, where seven different players crossed the plate. "We’ve really come together this year as a team, not even just on the field, but off the field," said junior Emily O'Brien. That off-field bond is creating on-field trust, allowing players to swing freely and celebrate each other's successes.

With a perfect record and a unified locker room, the Rams have every reason to dream big. Yet, the focus remains on the immediate goal: conquering the Greater Catholic League. This blend of top-tier talent and genuine camaraderie makes Badin a team to watch, proving that the strongest teams are often those that play for each other.
