Club says Andy Cook was set a "clear objective" of achieving third tier promotion when he joined.

In a surprising turn of events that has left the Norwich City Women's community reeling, the club has dismissed head coach Andy Cook and assistant coach Ethan Scott—just days after securing a hard-fought promotion to the third tier of the National League.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, comes on the heels of Sunday's triumphant victory over Moneyfields at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton-on-Trent. For fans, the timing couldn't be more unexpected. "It was a big surprise—it kind of came out of nowhere," said superfan Nicole Nicholls. "As shocking as it is, it's football, and clubs make these decisions. We've got to hope they have a plan in place."

Cook, who joined the Canaries in 2024 from Newcastle United Women, has been a fixture in the women's football circuit since 2018. Just after the promotion-clinching match, he described the achievement as "unbelievable" and expressed excitement for the future. "We had to trust the players, we had to believe in them, and they delivered," Cook said. "We've got to make sure we are ready for tier three because it's a ruthless league." He also hinted at strategic conversations with Flo Allen, the club's head of women's football, about preparing for the next level.

However, Allen revealed that Cook had been "set a clear objective" of earning third-tier promotion when he was hired, and that the decision to part ways—while "incredibly difficult"—was made after evaluating what it will take to not just survive in tier three, but to thrive. "I have huge appreciation for the work that Andy has done to get us over the line," Allen said. "Despite that, we have taken stock of what we believe is required to move our programme forward and to ensure that we not only sustain tier three status, but remain competitive on the pitch moving forward."

For now, the club will begin its search for a new head coach and assistant coach. While Nicholls acknowledged Cook's "incredible contribution," she emphasized the need for a clear vision from Allen and Ben Knapper. As the dust settles, the question on everyone's mind is whether this bold move will pay off when the Canaries take the pitch in the third tier next season.
