The Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium played host to a tactical chess match on Friday night, as Cesc Fabregas and Antonio Conte renewed their touchline rivalry in a Serie A showdown that ended 0-0. For fans of defensive discipline and midfield battles, this one had plenty to chew on—even if the scoreboard stayed silent.

Como, sitting fifth, and Napoli, holding firm in second, both had Champions League ambitions riding on this result. Fabregas’s side came closest early, when Tasos Douvikas sprang the offside trap on a perfect Nico Paz through ball. The striker rounded goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, but the Serbian shot-stopper’s quick recovery forced a narrow angle—and Amir Rrahmani’s heroic goal-line clearance kept the deadlock intact.

Napoli responded with their own near-miss. Matteo Politano rattled the woodwork, a reminder that Antonio Conte’s men weren’t content to sit back. The former Chelsea boss, reunited with his old protégé Fabregas on the sideline, watched his side weather early pressure before growing into the game.

Martin Baturina curled an effort just wide for Como, while Milinkovic-Savic rushed off his line to deny Assane Diao after another slick counter-attack orchestrated by Paz. A Nico Paz free kick sailed over the bar, and Jacobo Ramon couldn’t connect from four yards on a flicked corner—inches from breaking the deadlock.

After the break, Rasmus Hojlund’s penalty appeals were waved away (the forward was offside anyway), and Diao couldn’t keep his header down at the back post. Napoli’s Scott McTominay had the best chance of the half on 79 minutes, sprinting onto a pass from the left and drilling his finish just wide of the near post.

For the neutral, this was a clash of two tactical minds—Fabregas’s fluid attacking ideas against Conte’s rock-solid organization. Both managers walked away with a point, but neither will be fully satisfied. Como will rue their missed chances, while Napoli will wonder what might have been if Politano’s shot had dipped a few inches lower.

One thing’s for sure: when these two meet again, the sparks will fly.
