The Rutgers Scarlet Knights' backcourt just got a major boost for the 2026-2027 season. Guard Darren Buchanan Jr. has announced he will return to Piscataway, adding a crucial piece of experience and stability to the roster.

Buchanan Jr., a 6-foot-7, 235-pound guard, was a significant contributor last season, appearing in 34 games with 24 starts. He provided steady production, averaging 8.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. His efficiency stood out, as he shot 46.0% from the field and a respectable 35.3% from three-point range.

This decision marks a notable milestone in Buchanan Jr.'s collegiate journey. After redshirting at Virginia Tech and playing one season at George Washington, this will be the first time he spends consecutive seasons at the same program, offering Rutgers valuable continuity.

His return solidifies what is shaping up to be a deep and experienced backcourt. Buchanan Jr. now joins fellow returning guards Tariq Francis, Lino Mark, and Jamichael Davis, giving Coach Steve Pikiell a formidable and seasoned group to build around in the competitive Big Ten landscape.
