Rutgers basketball has addressed its most glaring offseason need with a major addition in the paint. The Scarlet Knights have landed a commitment from Virginia Tech transfer Christian Gurdak, a 6-foot-10, 260-pound center who brings immediate size and physicality to Piscataway.

Gurdak, a former four-star high school prospect, arrives with three years of eligibility remaining and is poised to step into a crucial role. He is expected to fill the void left by two-year starter Emmanuel Ogbole, who took over for the departed star Cliff Omoruyi. With rising sophomore Gevonte Ware as the only other true center on the roster, this acquisition is a significant step in rebuilding the frontcourt.

Ranked as a four-star transfer and among the top 20 available centers by major recruiting services, Gurdak showed promising flashes during his freshman season with the Hokies. In 31 appearances, he averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in just 17 minutes per game, showcasing efficient interior scoring by shooting over 63% on two-point attempts.

His potential was on full display in a signature performance against Virginia, where he exploded for 17 points and a staggering 19 rebounds in a triple-overtime victory. That kind of effort on the glass and around the rim is exactly what Rutgers needs to compete in the physical Big Ten conference.

Steve Turner, Gurdak's high school coach at Gonzaga, emphasized the toughness he will bring, stating he is "a dude who is all in" and will provide a physical presence the Scarlet Knights have lacked. As the offseason continues, Rutgers is still expected to target additional frontcourt depth, but securing a talent like Gurdak is a foundational move for the program's future.
