The Rockford IceHogs are shaking things up behind the bench. On Monday morning, the team announced that assistant coach Rob Klinkhammer has been relieved of his duties after four seasons with the organization. The move comes as part of a broader push for better results within the Chicago Blackhawks' farm system.

Klinkhammer, 39, was originally hired on August 4, 2022, and spent the last four years working primarily with the IceHogs' forwards while also overseeing the team's power play. Unfortunately, that unit struggled mightily this past season, finishing 31st out of 32 teams in the American Hockey League with a conversion rate of just 13.1 percent. The lack of production on the man advantage was a key factor in Rockford missing the postseason for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign—a tough pill to swallow for a franchise aiming to develop future NHL talent.

IceHogs General Manager Mark Bernard expressed gratitude for Klinkhammer's service, saying, "The IceHogs would like to thank Rob for his four years of coaching in Rockford. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future." It's a classy send-off, but the message is clear: the organization expects more.

Klinkhammer is no stranger to the Rockford community. During his playing career, he suited up for the IceHogs from 2008 to 2012, making 242 appearances—the eighth-most in franchise history—and notching 44 goals and 65 assists for 109 points. He also made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2010-11 season before being traded in December 2011. Over five NHL seasons, he went on to play 193 games for the Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Edmonton Oilers, tallying 22 goals and 21 assists for 43 points.

The change signals that the Blackhawks are serious about turning things around from top to bottom. The IceHogs finished with just 61 points last season (28-39-3-2), placing them third from the bottom in the AHL—only one point ahead of the last-place Hartford Wolf Pack. With head coach Jared Nightingale's staff now down a key assistant, all eyes will be on Rockford as they look to rebuild and get back on track for the 2026-27 season.
