In a major offseason victory for BYU basketball, star point guard Robert Wright III has withdrawn from the transfer portal and will return to the Cougars for the 2025-26 season. The decision comes after Wright, one of the most coveted players in the portal, visited the Kentucky Wildcats but was ultimately convinced to stay in Provo by head coach Kevin Young.
Wright's return is a massive boost for a BYU program looking to build on a 23-12 season. Emerging as one of the nation's premier floor generals last year, he averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game, earning All-Big 12 Third-Team honors. His efficient shooting splits—44.5% from the field, 38.8% from three, and 81.0% from the line—solidify him as a dynamic offensive engine.
With freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa heading to the NBA, Wright immediately becomes the focal point of the Cougars' roster. His leadership and proven production will be critical as BYU aims to advance deeper into March Madness after a first-round exit last tournament.
Ranked as the No. 1 point guard and No. 6 overall player in the transfer portal by On3, Wright's commitment to stay is a statement for the program. He joins a strong incoming portal class that features former Kentucky guard Collin Chandler (On3's No. 32 overall portal player) and former Syracuse forward Tyler Betsy, giving Coach Young a formidable core to work with for the upcoming campaign.
