Former MTSU women's basketball coach Rick Insell has been named The Tennessean's 2026 Fred Russell Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

When Rick Insell sat down for his interview with Middle Tennessee State more than two decades ago, he wasn't about to sugarcoat his approach. The legendary coach, fresh off a dominant run at Shelbyville High School, faced a simple question from MTSU deputy athletic director Diane Turnham: would he change his coaching style at the college level?

"I'm gonna come in and be Rick Insell," he told her without hesitation. "I don't know any other way to coach. If you want me to come in and be Rick Insell, then that's what I'll do."

Turnham's response was just as direct: "That's what we want."

That confidence paid off in historic fashion. Now 74 years old and retired after the 2026 season, Insell has been named The Tennessean's 2026 Fred Russell Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. He'll be honored at the Middle Tennessee High School Sports Awards show on June 9 at Music City Center.

During his tenure at MTSU from 2005 to 2026, Insell built the winningest women's basketball program in school history, notching 505 victories and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. But his legacy extends far beyond the college ranks. Before stepping onto a collegiate sideline, he transformed Shelbyville High School into a statewide powerhouse. Combine both levels, and Insell's career win total stands at an astonishing 1,279 basketball games.

His trophy case tells the story of a coaching icon: the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, the National High School Hall of Fame, the Blue Raider Sports Hall of Fame, the Basketball Coaches of Tennessee Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and the TSSAA Hall of Fame. In 2025, he added another honor with induction into the CUSA Hall of Fame.

When asked about the secret behind such sustained success, Insell keeps it simple. "Decide what you want to do and where you want to go, then find those people and get around them," he said. "Most people who give you advice in the coaching field..."

For coaches and athletes looking to build their own legacy, Insell's journey is a masterclass in staying true to your vision—and proving that being yourself can take you all the way to the Hall of Fame.
