The NFC West rivalry just got a little more interesting—and not in the way you might expect. According to a recent report, the Seattle Seahawks aren't losing any sleep over the Los Angeles Rams' decision to draft quarterback Ty Simpson.
ESPN's Brady Henderson revealed on "NFL Live" that Seattle had only a third-round grade on Simpson, meaning they weren't exactly heartbroken when their division rivals scooped him up. "Sometimes teams will kind of squirm and get nervous when a team in their division drafts a player," Henderson explained. "I can tell you, this was not the case with the Seahawks and Ty Simpson."
In fact, the Seahawks seem downright relieved. Henderson added, "I don't think the Seahawks were at all disappointed to see a player that's probably not going to help them out much this season."
This isn't the first time a division rival has smiled at the Rams' draft choice. San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch couldn't hide his amusement when asked about the pick earlier. It seems the NFC West isn't exactly quaking in its cleats over Simpson's arrival.
Now, let's put this in context. The Rams are in win-now mode, boasting a roster that could contend for a Super Bowl this season. While adding an instant-impact rookie like Makai Lemon or Kenyon Sadiq might have given them a more immediate boost, Simpson is viewed as the long-term answer under center. The Seahawks, meanwhile, appear to be betting that the present is more important than the future when it comes to their divisional matchup.
Of course, draft grades vary wildly from team to team, so a third-round evaluation from Seattle doesn't mean Simpson can't develop into a star. But for now, the Seahawks are confident they've got nothing to worry about—and they're not afraid to show it.
