Liverpool's reported interest in Barcelona defender Jules Kounde is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the season—and it raises some serious questions about the club's priorities at Anfield.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are "preparing" a substantial offer for the French international, with plans to submit a bid at the end of the current campaign. The proposed fee? A hefty €80 million (around £69 million). That's no small change, even for a club of Liverpool's stature.
Kounde, who built his reputation as a top-class center-half at Sevilla, has recently become Barcelona's first-choice right-back. He brings pace, composure, tactical intelligence, and comfort defending wide spaces—qualities that would fit nicely into Arne Slot's evolving system at Liverpool.
And that's exactly the point. Slot has spent much of this season trying to solve a positional puzzle that once belonged almost exclusively to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jeremie Frimpong arrived last summer for £29.5 million, but injuries and tactical experiments have clouded the picture. Conor Bradley has also dealt with fitness setbacks, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones have both been deployed at right-back at various points.
That's less a tactical masterstroke and more a sign of a squad trying to patch over a structural problem.
Mundo Deportivo reports that €80 million is the figure Barcelona would demand to green-light a sale. That aligns with earlier reports from Spain suggesting the Catalan club is "willing" to part ways with Kounde at that price. Sport has even claimed Barcelona are open to selling Kounde, Alejandro Balde, and Marc Casado to raise funds.
Here's where the story gets really interesting. Barcelona rarely sell elite assets without necessity. If Kounde is genuinely available, it may say more about their financial situation than his actual value on the pitch.
Unsurprisingly, Premier League interest has been widespread. Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal have all been linked with the 25-year-old over the past 18 months. In fact, Barcelona's Deco confirmed in October that City had already made contact for Kounde last summer.
For Liverpool, this potential move is about more than just signing a talented defender. It's about whether the club is ready to invest seriously in fixing a long-standing weakness—or if this is just another name on a long list of unfulfilled transfer rumors.
