According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Lakers pursued Giannis Antetokounmpo at February's NBA trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Lakers' offseason is already heating up, and it's not just about their early playoff exit. After being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, the Lakers are facing a roster shakeup that could include some blockbuster moves.

Several key players are approaching free agency, including LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, and Jaxson Hayes. Austin Reaves is expected to opt out of his contract, while Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton also have player options that could send them to the open market. But the biggest story? The persistent rumors that the Lakers are making a serious run at Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Lakers were among several teams that pursued Antetokounmpo at February's trade deadline. "Sources said postseason teams such as the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers pursued Antetokounmpo at the February deadline," Charania reported. "Their finishes to the campaign will play a major factor in their aggressiveness to trade for him."

The two-time MVP has reportedly been eyeing a change of scenery, and the Bucks are said to be "open for business" regarding trade offers. Antetokounmpo, who turns 32 in December, averaged an impressive 27.6 points on 62% shooting this season. However, any potential deal comes with a catch: Antetokounmpo will have significant influence over his destination, and he hasn't indicated whether the Lakers are on his list.

"Rival executives believe that Antetokounmpo's desired teams will be the largest factor in his trade destination," Charania added. "He is essentially on an expiring contract, with next season guaranteed before a player option in 2027, giving him leverage to navigate to a specific team based on whether he would agree to stay long term given the players and picks needed to acquire him."

For Lakers fans dreaming of a LeBron-Giannis pairing, the path forward is anything but certain. But one thing is clear: the purple and gold are ready to swing for the fences this offseason.
