LeBron James' NBA future is once again a hot topic, and this time, it's Hall of Famer Paul Pierce stirring the pot. During a recent appearance on Kevin Garnett's podcast KG: Certified, Pierce dropped a surprising take: he believes "King James" should hang up his sneakers—but not because of his performance. Instead, Pierce argues the 41-year-old superstar should retire to escape the relentless criticism he still faces.
"Yeah, I think he should, man," Pierce said when Garnett asked directly. "Just like for the simple fact that at the age that he still receives the criticism that he still does. The greats wasn't getting this criticism late. Nobody was criticizing Kobe (Bryant) when he wasn't going to the playoffs in his last year. They was just enjoying his moments. Like, the same with (Michael) Jordan in Washington."
Pierce doubled down, emphasizing the double standard James endures. "For the simple fact that the man is 41, and we still critiquing him like he 25 and should be winning championships still... Just the criticism he gets still. He still gets criticism."
It's a bold argument, especially when you look at the numbers. James, who turns 42 on Dec. 30, averaged a solid 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game this season, shooting an efficient 51.5% from the field. In the postseason, those numbers bumped up to 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.7 rebounds. Not bad for a player many consider past his prime.
Sure, the Lakers were swept in the first round by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder—a team that looks poised for another title run. But context matters: Luka Dončić missed the final three games of that series due to injury, leaving L.A. with little firepower against a juggernaut. James is no longer the four-time Finals MVP who carried teams to championships, but he remains a very good NBA player. And based on his current production, he could easily keep competing at a high level next season and beyond.
So, should LeBron retire? Pierce thinks the criticism alone is reason enough. But for fans who love watching greatness defy age, the debate is just getting started.
