The Ontario Reign have answered the call. After a tough Game 1 shutout, the Reign roared back with a commanding 5-1 victory over the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Game 2 of the AHL Pacific Division semifinals, evening the series at 1-1.
Facing the possibility of a 2-0 series hole on home ice, the Reign played with a sense of urgency that was palpable from the opening puck drop. Goaltender Pheonix Copley was a wall between the pipes, turning aside 34 shots, while the penalty kill unit delivered a perfect 5-for-5 performance.
"That win was huge for us," said forward Francesco Pinelli. "We wanted to show our dominance and get back to our game. We executed our game plan, and we're going to build off that."
The Firebirds struck first for the second straight game, with Lleyton Roed scoring at the 7:52 mark of the first period. After being blanked 3-0 in Game 1 and trailing again, the Reign and their fans desperately needed a spark.
Logan Brown provided it, scoring Ontario's first goal in 78 minutes of game action—spanning back to the final minutes of Game 1. The goal, assisted by Pinelli and Jack Millar, breathed life into the building and shifted the momentum.
Glenn Gawdin then gave the Reign their first lead of the series late in the second period, with helpers from Angus Booth and Andre Lee. From there, the floodgates opened. Cole Guttman scored just 15 seconds into the third period, and Pinelli added a shorthanded goal two minutes later to put the Reign up 4-1. Martin Chromiak capped the scoring, sealing the dominant win.
"Home ice advantage is huge," Copley said. "Giving away the first one obviously isn't ideal, so this one was that much more important. Now we have to go there and get the job done in Coachella."
With the series now tied, the best-of-five shifts to Coachella Valley for Game 3 on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Reign have momentum, and they'll need every bit of it on the road.
