Sunday’s Mother’s Day matchup at Fenway Park was a tough pill to swallow for Red Sox Nation. Boston dropped a 4-1 decision to the Tampa Bay Rays, marking the fourth time in six home series this season that the Sox have failed to take the series. With a 17-23 record, the team’s margin for error is razor-thin—and that was on full display against a sharp Rays squad.

Trevor Story’s fifth-inning error proved to be the turning point. With one out and a runner on second, Rays speedster Chandler Simpson hit a routine grounder to short. Story, partially screened by the baserunner, attempted a backhand but booted the ball into left field. The miscue allowed a run to score and put Simpson on second. Two batters later, a hard-hit single from Ben Williamson brought Simpson home, stretching Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-0. Story had been error-free for 20 games before this play—a tough break for a player who’s been working hard to tighten up his defense.

Offensively, the Red Sox couldn’t solve Rays starter Nick Martinez. The right-hander entered the day with a 1.71 ERA and lived up to the billing, allowing just one run on seven hits over 5.2 innings. Boston’s bats managed to put runners on base but couldn’t string together the big hit when it mattered most.

To make matters worse, the Red Sox lost catcher Willson Contreras early in the game after he was hit on the hand by a pitch in the first inning. With Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony already on the injured list, the last thing Boston needs is another key player sidelined. The club announced Contreras’ injury as a day-to-day situation, but it’s a reminder of how quickly depth can be tested over a long season.

For fans watching at home or wearing their favorite Red Sox gear, this one stings. The team fought hard but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. With a tough stretch ahead, Boston will need to tighten up both defensively and at the plate to turn things around.
