The Boston Red Sox bullpen got a promising early look at one of its key offseason additions this week. Veteran reliever Tommy Kahnle, signed in March, made his 2025 debut for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, turning in a solid inning of work. The right-hander allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk while recording a strikeout, showing flashes of the experience that has seen him pitch for five different MLB clubs and in the World Baseball Classic.
Kahnle's performance carries extra significance due to a unique clause in his contract. The deal includes an "upward mobility" option, meaning any MLB team—including the Red Sox—can promote him to their major league roster by May 1. If he isn't on a big-league squad by June 1, Kahnle can opt out of his contract entirely. This creates a compelling deadline for Boston's front office to evaluate his readiness.
After making 66 appearances for the Detroit Tigers last season, the 36-year-old is focused on refining his pitch mix to earn a spot. "Last year I really liked my fastball. I just didn’t throw it, at all," Kahnle told MassLive. He believes increasing his fastball and slider usage will make his signature changeup—his "bread and butter"—even more effective. "I think it helps my changeup get back on track."
With a proven track record and a clear plan to adjust his approach, Kahnle represents a low-risk, high-reward arm for a bullpen. If he continues to show he can command his full arsenal in Triple-A, the Red Sox may need to act before the May 1 deadline to secure his services, or risk another team swooping in to add a seasoned veteran to their pitching staff.
