Real Madrid are once again preparing to dip into the summer transfer market to reinforce their central defense, and this time, an old target has resurfaced with a glowing recommendation from one of the club's greatest legends.

Last year, Los Blancos splashed €58 million on Dean Huijsen, but the young defender has struggled with consistency. Add to that the looming departure of David Alaba and recurring injury issues for Eder Militao, and it's clear why strengthening the backline has become a top priority for the Spanish giants.

According to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti, Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol has emerged as a potential target. The 23-year-old Croatian international has been on Real Madrid's radar for years, and their interest never faded—even after his high-profile move to the Premier League.

What makes this story even more intriguing is that Real Madrid legend Luka Modric personally recommended his compatriot to club president Florentino Perez during his time at the Bernabéu. Modric, who knows Gvardiol's game inside out from their time together on the international stage, clearly sees something special in the versatile defender.

However, a transfer for Gvardiol remains highly unlikely. He's under contract with Manchester City until 2028 and is reportedly close to extending that deal through 2033. The new contract would come with a significant salary bump, making it even harder for Real Madrid to pry him away from the Etihad Stadium.

But here's where things get interesting: the Croatian outlet suggests that the extension isn't as close to completion as English reports claim. If Real Madrid can disrupt those negotiations, they might just have a window of opportunity—though it's a big if.

There's another complication: Gvardiol has been sidelined since January after suffering a fractured tibia in his right leg. The injury required surgery, and his return to action remains unclear. His participation in the upcoming World Cup with Croatia is also uncertain, adding another layer of doubt to any potential move.

For now, Gvardiol's name might be generating buzz in the rumor mill, but the reality is that Real Madrid may need to look elsewhere for their defensive reinforcements this summer.
