The Baltimore Ravens may have found the perfect way to extend Marlon Humphrey's prime—and it all comes down to a smart draft pick.

After a rough 2025 season where Humphrey struggled in the slot, the Ravens appear to have a solution. The veteran cornerback logged 264 snaps in the slot last year, and the results were far from pretty. According to ESPN's Ben Solak, among slot defenders with at least 30 targets, Humphrey ranked third-worst in coverage success rate.

Enter Chandler Rivers, a fourth-round pick from Duke who brings a skill set tailor-made for the slot. Described as an "undersized but feisty jitterbug," Rivers has the quickness and instincts that typically translate to a long NFL career on the inside. If he hits, it would allow Humphrey to shift back outside—where he was significantly more effective, posting a 61.5% coverage success rate compared to just 46.9% in the slot.

At 30 years old, Humphrey is entering a stage where cornerbacks often see their production decline. But the Ravens' approach with Rivers suggests they're not giving up on their star—they're simply optimizing his role. As Solak notes, "Rivers is not exactly taking Humphrey's job—just the half of it that Humphrey isn't as equipped to do anymore."

This move is a textbook example of what the best teams do: put their players in position to succeed. For Humphrey, that means more time on the boundary, where his experience and physicality still shine. For the Ravens, it could mean squeezing another year or two of elite production from a player who's been a cornerstone of their defense.

Whether you're a Ravens fan or just appreciate smart roster construction, this is a storyline worth watching as the 2026 season approaches.
