In a sobering reminder that the celebrations don't always end well, Rangers defender Dujon Sterling has found himself on the wrong side of the law after admitting to drink-driving and careless driving just hours after a famous Old Firm victory.
The 26-year-old crashed his car into a barrier near the M8 motorway in the early hours of January 4—mere hours after Rangers had dismantled Celtic 3-1 in a thrilling derby clash. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Sterling pleaded guilty to driving at "excessive speeds" through city center streets, including Queen Street, Hope Street, and West Graham Street, before losing control.
The court heard Sterling's blood alcohol level was 60 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath—nearly three times the legal limit of 22. Prosecutor Christa Lindsay described his driving as "erratic" and "uncontrolled," with CCTV footage showing him narrowly missing another vehicle and having to "heavily brake" to avoid a collision.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Sterling outside his vehicle on his phone, appearing in a "dazed condition." He admitted losing control and veering into the protective barrier. While he initially faced a dangerous driving charge, this was reduced as part of his plea deal.
Sheriff Mary Shields handed down a £750 fine for careless driving and £1,500 for the drink-driving offense, along with a 12-month driving ban. Sterling's journey covered just 1.5 miles in a 30mph zone, but the estimated speed was well above the limit.
For football fans, this case serves as a stark cautionary tale: even the sweetest victory can turn sour in an instant when bad decisions follow the final whistle. Whether you're celebrating a derby win or just a night out, it's always better to leave the driving to someone else.
