Will Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi be Michigan Football’s backup QB in 2026? Here is his path to Ann Arbor and his outlook for the upcoming season:

The Michigan Wolverines made a savvy move this offseason, adding veteran quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi from Colorado State via the transfer portal. With starting experience and a proven track record, he brings a steady presence to a quarterback room that needed depth after several departures.

Fowler-Nicolosi, a three-star recruit in the class of 2022, originally chose Colorado State over offers from Pittsburgh, Nevada, Oregon State, and Toledo. He quickly proved his worth in Fort Collins, making 28 starts and leading the Mountain West in total offense in 2023 with an impressive 3,433 yards. Over his college career, he has accumulated 6,938 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions, completing 60.2% of his passes while adding six rushing scores.

At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Fowler-Nicolosi is a physical quarterback with legitimate arm talent. He entered the transfer portal this offseason and committed to Michigan in January, filling a critical need after Davis Warren, Jadyn Davis, and Mikey Keene all transferred out of Ann Arbor. His experience as a starter makes him a valuable insurance policy behind freshman phenom Bryce Underwood.

However, Fowler-Nicolosi will have to earn his spot on the depth chart. He did not participate in spring practices but will join the team for the summer term. Underwood is locked in as the starter, while incoming freshman Tommy Carr impressed during spring ball and is currently the backup. While Fowler-Nicolosi will get a chance to compete, the buzz around Carr suggests he may have the edge early on. Still, don't be surprised if both quarterbacks see action in Week 1 against Western Michigan if the game turns into a blowout—a smart way to build depth and confidence for the season ahead.
