CANNONSBURG, Ky. — Runs have come in bunches for the West Senators' softball program. That story was no different in a Tri-State Softball Showcase matchup for the Senators against Chesapeake on Saturday afternoon at Boyd County High School, as Dani Coleman's group put together a five-run fifth and an eight-run seventh to collect a 14-1 triumph over the Panthers. West Senators' softball continues to prove that when it rains, it pours — and on Saturday afternoon, the downpour came in the form of runs. In a dominant Tri-State Softball Showcase performance against Chesapeake at Boyd County High School, Dani Coleman's squad exploded for a five-run fifth inning and an eight-run seventh, rolling to a commanding 14-1 victory over the Panthers.

This offensive outburst is nothing new for the Senators (14-8), who have now scored 10 or more runs in 12 of their 22 games this season. Impressively, they boast an 11-1 record in those high-scoring contests.

"We just weren't really connecting right there at the beginning," Coleman admitted. "We were off on the spin, and that's a credit to Chesapeake's execution. We just changed our course, made better pitch selections and took more pitches. We became more patient through the course of the game."

For the first four innings, however, it looked like the Panthers (7-12) might pull off an upset. Starting pitcher Madalyn Fry held West to just two hits through four frames, keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0. Chesapeake coach Brendan Medley praised his team's fight, saying, "The resilience, the grit, the determination and the competitiveness in believing in one another and not giving up — that's what a really good team can do. We're really just trying to set the culture and the expectations of what our program should be about and can do. The girls are grasping that and working to get better every day."

On the mound for West, freshman Aubree Hayslip delivered a complete-game three-hitter, stepping in for usual ace Layla Kamer. With postseason play approaching, Coleman is looking to develop a reliable second pitcher to keep opponents guessing. "We usually use Kamer, but with tournament play approaching, we just wanted to get a different look," Coleman explained. "Aubree brings something different, and she's really disciplined. She hit her spots well, worked well and stayed composed and controlled under pressure."

The game's turning point came in the fifth inning, sparked by sophomore catcher Lainey Cook. After a leadoff single from nine-hole hitter Ally Hedge, Cook took a 1-0 pitch deep to left-center field, clearing the fence for a 2-0 West lead. The Senators weren't done there — a walk by Kylee McCleese, a single from Hayslip, and an error loaded the bases for senior Maleah Whitman, who drove in two more with a sharp single. Junior first baseman Ariane Jordan capped the rally with a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 5-0.

"With confidence, this is one of the first years that I can say that our team has power from the top of the lineup down," Coleman added, highlighting the depth that makes this Senators squad a dangerous opponent as tournament season looms.
