Christian Ramirez wasn't originally part of Austin FC's plans this season. In fact, on MLS opening day, he was wearing a different uniform entirely. But sometimes the best stories are the ones you don't see coming.
On Sunday at Q2 Stadium, Ramirez delivered a goal and an assist to power the Verde & Black to a commanding 2-0 victory over St. Louis City SC. It was a performance that reminded everyone why he's become one of the most valuable pickups in the league this year.
The match carried extra emotional weight for Austin FC. Forward Brandon Vazquez made his long-awaited return after tearing his ACL nearly 10 months ago, while midfielder Owen Wolff stepped onto the pitch for the first time this season. Yet it was Ramirez who stole the spotlight.
His 69th-minute header came courtesy of a perfectly weighted pass from Dani Pereira, who was also making his comeback from injury. Twelve minutes later, Ramirez showed his unselfish side, laying the ball off for Myrto Uzuni to seal the win. The result gave Austin FC (3-4-4, 13 points) back-to-back victories for the first time since early September.
While his exact salary won't be known until the MLS Players Association releases its spring salary guide later this month, one thing is certain: Ramirez has been worth every penny. With the team searching for reliable attacking options alongside Uzuni until Vazquez's return, Ramirez has delivered four goal contributions this season, including a game-winner against D.C. United. His impact extends beyond the stat sheet, too.
"From day one, you never would have known that he was brand new to the team," said Austin FC goalkeeper Brad Stuver. "He's a veteran of this league, been on a lot of teams, and won some trophies. He's been able to come in and use his experience and his voice. Being bilingual, he helps bridge the gap between the guys that don't speak as much Spanish."
As for Vazquez, his five minutes on the field were a victory in themselves. Entering in the 89th minute, he played his first competitive minutes since suffering his knee injury during a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match against San Jose on July 8. "I'm just grateful being able to be back with the team," he said, summing up a day that felt like a turning point for Austin FC.
