In a classic high school softball showdown that had everything—late-inning drama, clutch hitting, and momentum swings—the Polson Pirates staged a stunning comeback to edge the Libby Loggers 9-8 on Tuesday.
The game turned dramatically in the fifth inning. Capitalizing on three crucial walks, Polson's Maddie Turner stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of the day: a bases-clearing double. That swing capped a six-run rally, completely erasing what had seemed like a comfortable Libby lead.
Libby had seized control just an inning earlier, exploding for six runs of their own in the fourth. The highlight was a powerful two-run homer from Hadleigh Wood, which helped the Loggers build an 8-3 advantage. After starting the season a perfect 3-0, however, this marks their second consecutive tough loss.
Polson's pitching was key to sealing the win. Logan McCrea provided 3 2/3 innings of stellar relief, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out three. Turner, who was also the offensive hero, contributed 3 1/3 innings in the circle to help close out the victory for the Pirates, who improve to 5-3.
The Loggers didn't go down without a fight. In the seventh inning, a leadoff single from Maddie Willis brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Polson's defense held firm, recording three consecutive outs to end the thrilling contest.
Libby (3-2) will look to bounce back on the road Tuesday against Whitefish, before returning home to host Columbia Falls on Saturday, April 25.
