Quarterback Darian Mensah is settling into a new shade of orange and green, and the Miami Hurricanes couldn't be happier. The former Duke star, who played a pivotal role in Miami's run to last season's College Football Playoff national championship game, is now aiming to lead the charge from within.
Mensah's journey to Coral Gables is a fascinating twist of fate. Last December, his performance for Duke in the ACC title game victory over Virginia was instrumental in securing Miami's at-large CFP berth. Fast forward a few months, and the most coveted quarterback in the transfer portal chose to bring his talents to South Beach, giving the Hurricanes a massive offseason win.
"It’s just a good feeling to be around a good group of guys," Mensah said, comparing his new teammates. "The people here are just special people off the field, which makes them so much easier to work with on the field."
Miami fans will get their first live look at their new signal-caller in Saturday's spring game, and the expectations are sky-high. Head coach Mario Cristobal has already heaped praise on his new quarterback, calling him "a complete professional" with "great command, personality, arm talent, and escapability."
Mensah's stats speak for themselves. After throwing for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns at Tulane in 2024, he exploded last season at Duke, leading the ACC with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns while engineering a surprise conference championship run. Now with his third team in as many years, he brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of elevating programs.
"I’m going to go out there and try to put on a show," Mensah said of the upcoming spring game. "Just take what the defense gives me, and go out and have a bunch of fun with my guys."
The Hurricanes are hoping Mensah can continue their recent success with transfer quarterbacks, a strategy that has paid major dividends. If his seamless transition and immediate command of the offense are any indication, Miami's high-powered attack is in very capable hands, setting the stage for another thrilling season in the ACC.
