After nearly a decade of coming up just short, the Pisgah Bears softball team has finally reclaimed its throne. For the first time since 2017, Pisgah is the Mountain 8 Conference champion—a title that represents years of grit, growth, and unwavering determination.
"It represents the work that these girls have been putting in, some of them for four years before being starters," said Head Coach Heidi Morgan. "Our conference is tough, and I'm just proud that we were able to persevere and battle to the top."
Currently ranked in the top 10 of the 4A division statewide, the Bears are poised for a deep playoff run. With a first-round bye and a couple of home games likely on the horizon, the team is already shifting its focus to what lies ahead. "They're excited, but still ready to put the work in. Next week, we'll turn our focus to playoffs," Morgan added.
This championship didn't come out of nowhere. For nearly a decade, Pisgah has been knocking on the door, consistently finishing second or third in the conference behind powerhouse programs like West Henderson and Franklin. But this year, the Bears finally broke through.
The title-clinching moment came with two decisive wins over Brevard this week—a 4-2 victory on Monday followed by a 9-5 triumph on Thursday. That sweep sealed the outright conference crown after Pisgah entered the final week with just a one-game lead over West Henderson.
A pivotal turning point came last Thursday during a road trip to West Henderson. Trailing 4-2 early, the Bears erupted with a five-run fourth inning to flip the script and take a 7-4 lead. In the seventh, they tacked on three more runs—runs that proved crucial as the Falcons mounted a five-run rally of their own. Pisgah held on for a thrilling 10-9 win.
"They play travel ball with a lot of those girls, and just being able to battle and hold on to the end was great," Morgan said. "West is a very strong team and an excellent hitting team, and they've proven that against us twice, being able to battle back late in the game, and us doing the same."
The Bears carried that momentum into a dominant 21-0 win over East Henderson the following day, preserving their one-game advantage heading into the final week. All that stood between Pisgah and the title were two games against Brevard—and the Bears took care of business.
In Monday's matchup at home, Pisgah set the tone early, scoring in each of the first four innings to build a 4-2 lead. "I definitely feel like it was a big confidence boost being able to score some runs early. That's been a goal of ours all year," Morgan said. "We put the bat on the ball, and Brevard's a good team. They're a well-coached team. They make great plays."
Now, with the conference crown in hand, the Bears are ready to chase something even bigger. For a team that has spent years on the brink, the wait is finally over—and the best may be yet to come.
