The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without their manager, Don Kelly, as they open Tuesday's series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Major League Baseball handed Kelly a one-game suspension after determining that Pirates pitcher Chris Devenski intentionally threw at Cincinnati Reds rookie Sal Stewart during Saturday's game.

The drama unfolded in the seventh inning of what turned into a lopsided 17-7 Pirates victory. With a comfortable 15-6 lead, Devenski fired a fastball dangerously inside to Stewart, narrowly missing the rookie. Stewart, understandably upset by the close call, exchanged words, prompting umpires to intervene. After a brief conference, they ejected Devenski from the game.

Devenski didn't escape punishment either. The league issued him a three-game suspension along with an undisclosed fine. However, the right-hander has the option to appeal the decision. If he chooses to appeal, he remains eligible to pitch until a hearing is held, giving the Pirates some flexibility with their bullpen in the meantime.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension in baseball between veterans and rookies, especially in blowout situations. For the Pirates, Tuesday night's game against Arizona marks a chance to move past the controversy, though Kelly's absence will test the team's depth on the bench.
