IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma’s injury absence cost MI, says Harbhajan Singh after win over LSG

Harbhajan Singh said Rohit Sharma’s earlier return from injury could have improved Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 campaign. Rohit’s match-winning knock against Lucknow Super Giants highlighted his importance to the side. Harbhajan felt MI lost crucial matches during Rohit’s absence but believes the team still has an outside chance of reaching the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians may have found their missing piece—and according to legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh, it's none other than captain Rohit Sharma.

After a frustrating injury layoff, Rohit returned to the crease in style against Lucknow Super Giants at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, delivering a match-winning knock that reminded everyone why he's one of the most feared batsmen in the IPL. His commanding presence not only helped MI chase down a daunting target with ease but also lifted the spirits of a team that had been struggling to find its rhythm.

"It's important to be in the middle," Harbhajan explained during his analysis on JioStar. "You can do only so much sitting in the dugout. But Rohit didn't just lay the foundation—he built a couple of floors on it, leaving very little for the rest to do."

The former India off-spinner believes Rohit's absence during MI's early-season losing streak was a costly blow. "I wish his injury had healed a little earlier," Harbhajan said. "Who knows, they might have won a game or two during that losing streak and would still be alive in the competition."

While Rohit fell just short of a century, Harbhajan praised the knock as exceptional. "It would have been even better if he had got his hundred, but for the time he was there, he played exceptionally well," he added.

Despite MI's rocky campaign, Harbhajan isn't ready to write them off just yet. With a glimmer of playoff hope still flickering, he believes every match from here on is a must-win. "They will give themselves a chance if they win every game and get to 14 points," he noted. "Who knows—if other teams start losing, there could be a net run-rate situation at 14 points. Anything can happen in this tournament."

For MI fans, Rohit's return isn't just about runs—it's about the belief that their captain can still turn the tide when it matters most.
