Penn State men's lacrosse coach Jeff Tambroni discusses preparing his team for their NCAA tournament matchup against Princeton.

As the Penn State Nittany Lions prepare for another deep NCAA tournament run, head coach Jeff Tambroni knows that familiarity can be both a blessing and a curse. The Nittany Lions, who have tasted success in recent postseason appearances but fallen short of championship glory, now face a familiar foe: the Princeton Tigers, the tournament's top seed.

Penn State defeated Princeton on the road earlier this season, but Tambroni is quick to caution that Sunday's matchup will be an entirely different battle. "We have a ton of respect for the amount of talent that they have," Tambroni shared in a recent Zoom interview. "One of the things that we did in the first go-around is that I just thought we played really well together. I thought our offense and defense played really well in more of a collaborative sense."

The Nittany Lions boast a balanced roster that blends youthful energy with seasoned leadership. Sophomore Hunter Aquino has emerged as a key offensive force, while freshman goaltender Preston Hawkins and redshirt freshman midfielder Andrew Beard have stepped up admirably—though they've yet to face a test as daunting as Princeton in the tournament setting. On the flip side, veterans like Kyle Lehman and Alex Ross provide the steadying presence that championship teams rely on.

When it comes to mental preparation for the high-stakes NCAA tournament, Tambroni emphasizes the value of experience without dismissing the power of belief. "You could look at that in one of two ways," he explained. "There's one side of it that you don't need to see something in order to truly believe it. You can have a tremendous amount of success if you prepare hard. But at the same time, I think having been there is more useful in preparation."

For Penn State to advance past Princeton and continue their championship quest, it will take a true collective effort. But with a coach who understands the delicate balance between confidence and preparation, the Nittany Lions are ready to write their next chapter.
