The New England Patriots' 2026 draft class has hit an unexpected roadblock. Seventh-round pick Quintayvious Hutchins, an edge rusher out of Boston College, now finds himself facing a criminal charge following his recent arrest.
According to court documents obtained by CBS News, Hutchins has been charged with assault and battery on a family or household member. The specific details surrounding the alleged incident remain unclear at this time.
The 23-year-old rookie was arraigned Wednesday morning in Newton District Court, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. He has since been released on the condition that he returns for his next scheduled hearing.
The Patriots organization quickly addressed the situation, releasing a statement that read: "We are aware of the report involving Quintayvious Hutchins. We take these matters very seriously and are in the process of gathering additional information. We will not have further comment at this time."
Hutchins was selected with the No. 247 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft—a selection that came with high hopes from the local product who dreamed of playing for his hometown team. "I've been saying since the draft started, 'I'm going to be a Patriot. I'm going to be a Patriot,'" Hutchins said shortly after being drafted, via Patriots Wire's Sophie Weller.
During his two seasons at Boston College, Hutchins posted respectable numbers: 5.5 sacks, 72 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and one interception. At 6-foot-3 and 243 pounds with 33-inch arms, he showed flashes of potential that caught the Patriots' attention.
As a seventh-round pick, Hutchins was already facing an uphill battle to secure a roster spot—a reality for many late-round selections. His best path to making the team was through special teams contributions. NBC Sports' Phil Perry had noted that Hutchins was viewed as "another possible kicking-game contributor," having logged over 400 special teams snaps in college.
Now, with this legal situation unfolding, Hutchins' chances of making the Patriots' roster could be in serious jeopardy. If found guilty, it may effectively end his opportunity to wear the Patriots uniform altogether. As the legal process moves forward, all eyes will be on how this situation develops and what it means for the young player's NFL future.
