At Palisades High School, some ideas are just too good to pass up—and naming the new performance center after legendary teacher and coach Ed Ruisz was one of them.
"A group of his former players who ran track and played football for him in the late 1980s brought up the idea," said athletic director Brian Gilbert. "And it just made so much sense. Ed meant so much to this school and community, and fitness was such a big part of his life. This is a perfect fit."
That perfect fit becomes official this Friday at 4 p.m., when a ribbon-cutting ceremony will dedicate the school's state-of-the-art fitness facility as the Ed Ruisz Sports Performance Center. The facility honors the memory of the beloved teacher, coach, and academic leader who passed away in October at age 70.
"Naming this facility after Ed was the only choice that truly made sense," said Dr. Bridget O'Connell, superintendent of the Palisades School District. "He didn't just teach and coach—he built character, inspired confidence, and shaped young people for life."
Ruisz spent 35 years teaching history at Palisades while also coaching track and field and football. His girls' track team achieved an incredible 166 consecutive dual-meet wins during his tenure, and he led the football team to its first winning season in 1988, just his third year as head coach.
Gilbert remembers being captivated by Ruisz's teaching style. "I started teaching at Palisades in 2001 and would walk by Ed's classroom and stop to listen to him talk about history. He made it all so interesting. As a coach, his track teams were dominant, and he was also a really good football coach. He was the first one to do speed training before anyone really knew what that even was."
Ruisz was truly ahead of his time. In the 1980s, he traveled to Russia to study strength and conditioning techniques, then brought that knowledge back to Palisades—long before most schools even had weight rooms. His forward-thinking approach to athletic training laid the foundation for the very facility that now bears his name, ensuring his legacy will inspire generations of Pirates to come.
