The San Diego Padres are navigating some early-season roster shuffles, as catcher Luis Campusano has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a broken left toe. The injury occurred when Campusano fouled a ball off his foot during a recent game. The 26-year-old backup backstop had been enjoying a strong start to the season, posting a .288 batting average with a .958 OPS while splitting time behind the plate with Freddy Fermin.

In a silver lining for the organization, the Padres have called up 28-year-old Rodolfo Durán from Triple-A El Paso to make his major league debut. Durán, who began his minor league journey in 2015 with the Phillies organization and later spent time with the Yankees and Royals, signed with San Diego in January 2025. He has been batting .238 with a .785 OPS in 23 games for El Paso this season. Padres manager Craig Stammen expressed excitement about the call-up, noting, "We really loved what we saw from him in spring training. He’s got a great arm, but his bat has come alive the last two years. We definitely see him as a big league catcher." Durán was in the starting lineup for San Diego's homestand opener against St. Louis, batting ninth and catching right-hander Michael King.

Meanwhile, the Padres have also transferred right-hander Joe Musgrove to the 60-day injured list, as his recovery from Tommy John surgery continues to progress more slowly than anticipated. Musgrove hasn't taken the mound since the NL playoffs in October 2024, and he has yet to resume throwing. "He’s just focused on getting healthy, doing whatever he needs to do on a daily basis," Stammen said. Musgrove's extended absence is a significant blow to a Padres rotation that has high expectations this season.

For fans and fantasy baseball enthusiasts, Campusano's injury opens a window for Durán to showcase his skills at the highest level. As the Padres aim to stay competitive in a tough NL West, every roster move counts—and this one brings a fresh face with a compelling story to the big leagues. Stay tuned to see how Durán handles the spotlight, and keep an eye on Musgrove's recovery timeline as the season unfolds.
