Patriots rookie offensive tackle Caleb Lomu has all of the intangibles to succeed, but there was at least one pre-draft concern.

The New England Patriots made a bold move in the first round of the NFL Draft, trading up to snag offensive tackle Caleb Lomu with the 28th overall pick. While the rookie brings impressive size and athleticism to the field, a common pre-draft concern has emerged about the player's mindset—something that could shape his transition to the pros.

According to NBC Sports' Phil Perry, speaking on the Patriots Daily Podcast, scouts and team officials have raised questions about Lomu's "wiring." Perry noted, "I think there are some concerns about the wiring, from what I've been told about this player. I'd think you'd prefer a little bit different football makeup. Just about anybody that I've talked to that has met him, or interviewed him, scouted him this offseason says the same thing. That's kind of the consensus on Caleb Lomu."

However, it's not all doom and gloom for the young lineman. Perry also emphasized that the issues are considered coachable, meaning they won't necessarily derail his NFL career. In fact, one offensive coordinator told Perry, "We can coach effort and finish. We can't coach athleticism." That's a crucial distinction for a player like Lomu, whose raw talent is undeniable.

The Patriots clearly believe in his potential. Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf expressed excitement about the pick, saying, "He's young, he's experienced, he's athletic, he's a great kid. Frankly, I was a little surprised that he was still available, and that's why we decided to move up a little bit. We're excited to add him."

For fans eyeing the next Patriots star, Lomu's journey will be one to watch—especially as the coaching staff works to refine his approach. After all, in the NFL, athleticism opens the door, but the right mindset keeps you in the game.
