The Edmonton Oilers have officially parted ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch, ending a tenure marked by remarkable highs and a turbulent offseason that drew widespread criticism across the NHL.

The decision comes after reports surfaced that the Oilers quietly attempted to pursue former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy while Knoblauch was still employed. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Edmonton contacted Vegas for permission to interview Cassidy after the Golden Knights fired him in March, but the request was denied—and the news quickly leaked.

TSN's Ryan Rishaug confirmed the move on social media, posting, "The Oilers have relieved Kris Knoblauch of his coaching duties." The announcement followed sharp criticism from former NHL forward Jeff O'Neill, who blasted Edmonton's handling of the situation on TSN OverDrive. "I think it's classless," O'Neill said. "If you're gonna do that, fire Kris Knoblauch. The guy took your team to two finals and turned it around." Former NHL executive Craig Button also weighed in, calling management's approach "a poor way to treat people."

Knoblauch originally took over in November 2023 after the Oilers stumbled to a 3-9-1 start under Jay Woodcroft. He quickly stabilized the club and guided Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025—a feat that had fans dreaming of a championship dynasty.

But the 2025-26 season told a different story. Despite entering the year with Cup-or-bust expectations, Edmonton finished with a disappointing 41-30-11 record and suffered a shocking first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks in six games. Defensive breakdowns, inconsistent goaltending, injuries, and struggling special teams all contributed to the collapse. Team captain Connor McDavid summed it up bluntly, describing Edmonton as "an average team with high expectations."

Knoblauch leaves with an impressive overall record of 135-77-21 in the regular season and a 31-22 playoff mark. But with McDavid's future looming large and the team's steep regression raising alarm bells, management felt a coaching change was necessary to get back on track.

For Oilers fans, the question now is whether this move will spark a turnaround—or add another chapter to a saga that's becoming all too familiar.
