The future of Liverpool's managerial hot seat is generating plenty of debate, and former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy has thrown a surprising name into the ring. While most fans have been buzzing about Xabi Alonso as the natural successor to Arne Slot, Murphy believes there's another "outstanding candidate" who deserves serious consideration – and it's not the Spanish legend.

Let's set the scene: Arne Slot's second season at Anfield has been far from smooth sailing, with the Dutchman facing intense pressure amid disappointing results. The rumor mill has been working overtime, with Xabi Alonso's name constantly linked to a potential Anfield return. However, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein, FSG isn't currently considering the former Real Madrid boss, preferring to stick with Slot for now.

But if Liverpool's hierarchy does decide to make a change, Murphy has his eyes set on Paris Saint-Germain's mastermind, Luis Enrique. Speaking to Betarades.gr (via Liverpool Echo), the former Reds star didn't hold back his enthusiasm: "For me, there is one outstanding candidate – Luis Enrique. Could Liverpool maybe tempt him, especially if he wins the Champions League again? Maybe he would feel like he needs a new challenge."

Murphy painted a vivid picture of what Enrique could bring to the table: "He is a phenomenal coach and when you watch PSG play, you kind of feel that is how I want my team to play." It's a bold endorsement from someone who knows what it takes to succeed at Anfield.

As for Alonso, Murphy acknowledged the emotional pull: "Xabi Alonso is an outstanding new manager and he has that connection with the Liverpool fans, which always helps from an emotional point of view. There has been a lot of talk recently about the manager's connection with the fans – or maybe lack of connection."

But he also raised a tactical concern: "The only thing with Xabi Alonso is that he primarily is a possession based manager, just like Arne Slot to a degree. I think Liverpool fans, at least from what we know, want a more risky, high energy and all-in type of football." Still, Murphy sees a bright future for the Spaniard: "He is a super young coach, so it wouldn't surprise me if we see him as a Liverpool manager at some point."

Whether it's Enrique's tactical flair, Alonso's emotional connection, or Slot's chance to turn things around, one thing is clear: Liverpool's next chapter is shaping up to be a fascinating one.
