The Arizona Wildcats' backcourt just got a major boost for next season. North Carolina guard Derek Dixon, a promising freshman from the 2025-26 season, has announced his commitment to Arizona via the NCAA transfer portal.

While not a starter from day one for the Tar Heels, Dixon's trajectory was impressive. He earned a starting role for the final 16 games of the season, appearing in 33 contests overall. His growth was evident as his playing time skyrocketed, logging at least 20 minutes in 15 of his last 16 outings after failing to reach that mark in his first seven games.

Dixon brings a potent and efficient scoring threat to Tucson. He averaged 6.5 points per game and, most notably, shot a blistering 39.7% from three-point range on 126 attempts. His late-season form was particularly strong, scoring in double figures in each of his final three games, including an 11-point, 6-assist, 5-rebound performance in the NCAA Tournament.

This kind of sharpshooting and playmaking makes him a perfect fit for Tommy Lloyd's high-octane system. Dixon arrives as one of the most coveted players in the portal and will look to help the Wildcats build on their momentum after a thrilling run to the 2026 Final Four.

The addition of Dixon comes as Arizona manages some roster turnover. The Wildcats recently saw freshman forward Dwayne Aristode, a four-star recruit who played 35 games this past season, enter the transfer portal. While Dixon's commitment strengthens the guard rotation, Arizona will look to fill the frontcourt depth left by Aristode and fellow transfer Sidi Gueye as they prepare for another championship pursuit.
