The Minnesota Golden Gophers have bolstered their roster with a key addition from the transfer portal, securing a commitment from in-state talent Nolan Groves.
Groves, a 6'7" forward, enters the program after a freshman season at Texas Tech where his role diminished after a promising start. A standout at Orono High School in Long Lake, Groves was a scoring machine, averaging over 34 points per game and leading his team to a state tournament finish. His journey to Minnesota brings him back home after initially choosing the Red Raiders over offers from the Gophers and Wisconsin.
Head coach Niko Medved has a strong track record of identifying players who fit his system, and Groves appears to be a perfect match. He brings a tough, physical presence with the ability to rebound and defend multiple positions. The primary focus for his development in maroon and gold will be rediscovering the consistent outside shooting that made him a highly-touted prospect.
While likely to begin in a rotational role off the bench, Groves has the potential to be a significant contributor. In Medved's system, which values versatility and toughness, this homecoming could be the ideal environment for Groves to thrive and grow into a impactful player over his remaining three years of eligibility.
