After more than a decade away, a familiar face is returning to lead the Lakota East girls basketball program. Nikki Drew, a 2015 Xavier Athletics Hall of Famer, was officially named the Thunderhawks' new head coach on Monday, May 4, bringing a wealth of experience and a winning pedigree back to the sideline.
Drew previously helmed the program from 2009 to 2013, posting a solid 55-40 overall record. During that tenure, she guided Lakota East to the district finals in 2010 and a memorable run to the Division I regional championship game in 2011. Her coaching journey began with a five-year stint as head coach at Colerain before she joined Lakota East as an assistant during the 2008-2009 season.
On the court, Drew's playing career was equally impressive. As Nikki Kremer, she was a two-time all-conference point guard at Xavier, where she averaged 8.9 assists per game in 1999—ranking second nationally and setting a single-season school record. She helped the Musketeers earn an NCAA Tournament berth as a senior. Her 545 career assists still stand as the second-highest total in Xavier history. A product of Mercy High School, she is also enshrined in the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame.
Drew steps in for Dan Wallace, who resigned in April to become the assistant athletic director at Mercy McAuley. She inherits a Lakota East team that finished 10-13 last season, but with her proven leadership and championship background, the Thunderhawks are poised for a resurgence.
