Nebraska basketball fans, get ready to welcome a dynamic new playmaker to the court. The Cornhuskers officially announced the addition of guard Trevan Leonhardt on Wednesday, a move that promises to inject some serious firepower into the backcourt.
Leonhardt arrives in Lincoln after a standout season at Utah Valley, where he started all 34 games and averaged an impressive 11.9 points per game while shooting a scorching 51% from the field. But his game is about more than just scoring—this versatile guard also dished out six assists, grabbed 5.4 rebounds, and added 2.1 steals per contest. His stellar performance earned him a spot on the All-WAC team, and he ranked among the national leaders in both assists and steals per game.
Head coach Fred Hoiberg couldn't hide his excitement about the new addition. "We are excited to add Trevan to our program, as we thought he was one of the best guards in the transfer portal," Hoiberg said in a press release. "He is a bigger guard who provides us with positional size in the backcourt. Trevan led the WAC in both assists and assist-to-turnover ratio the last two seasons, which shows his ability to run an offense and facilitate. This season, he emerged as more of a scorer, averaging double figures and shot over 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, he possesses the size to guard multiple positions and is very active in getting deflections and steals, which is important in our system."
For Nebraska, this signing fills a critical need. The Cornhuskers entered the transfer portal searching for a true playmaker, and Leonhardt fits the bill perfectly. His ability to both shoot the three and create opportunities for teammates should mesh seamlessly with Hoiberg's offensive system. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how Leonhardt integrates into the lineup, but one thing is clear: Nebraska's backcourt just got a serious upgrade.
