North Carolina Central University has officially named Olivia Gaines as its new head women's basketball coach, and if her track record is any indication, the Eagles are in for an exciting ride.
Gaines, introduced at a campus news conference on Wednesday, arrives with a reputation as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Her playing career under legendary South Carolina coach Dawn Staley shaped her philosophy, and she's already proven she can turn programs around quickly. At Allen University, she delivered back-to-back winning seasons, a 36-19 overall record, and the program's first SIAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards.
NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Louis "Skip" Perkins didn't mince words, calling Gaines "a proven winner at every level" and the perfect fit to elevate the Eagles program.
Gaines' coaching style is as fast as it is fierce. She described a system built on transition offense, quick-hitting plays, relentless man-to-man defense, and full-court pressure—an identity she plans to implement from day one. "I'm big on manifesting," Gaines said confidently. "I'm definitely going to win."
Her resume speaks for itself. Before Allen, she led Richard Bland College to a stunning 29-3 season and an NJCAA national championship game appearance in the program's very first season. She also guided USC Salkehatchie to a 20-2 record and a Region 10 title, earning Region 10 Coach of the Year honors along the way.
Now, Gaines takes over an NCCU team that finished 9-20 last season. But if history is any guide, don't expect the Eagles to stay down for long. With a coach who values player relationships and a fast, aggressive style, NCCU fans have every reason to believe a turnaround is already underway.
