NBA playoffs not enough; Milwaukee native Mosley fired as Magic coach

After five seasons as head coach in Orlando, including three straight playoff berths, the Magic are moving on from Milwaukee native Jamahl Mosley.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, the Orlando Magic have parted ways with head coach Jamahl Mosley—a Milwaukee native who helped resurrect the franchise but couldn't escape the dreaded first-round exit.

Mosley, 45, was fired Monday, just one day after the Detroit Pistons eliminated the Magic from the playoffs in a stunning collapse. Orlando had a golden opportunity to become just the seventh No. 8 seed to knock off a No. 1 seed, taking a commanding 3-1 series lead over Detroit. But what happened next was the stuff of nightmares: The Magic held a 60-38 halftime lead in Game 6 at home, only to score a mere 19 points in the second half and lose 93-79. The Pistons then closed out the series with a 116-94 win in Game 7.

For Mosley, the writing was on the wall despite three straight playoff appearances. His five-year tenure in Orlando produced a 189-221 record, with only two winning seasons. But the trajectory was undeniable. After a dismal 22-60 debut in 2021-22, Mosley engineered a remarkable turnaround, winning 34 games the following year and leading the Magic to three consecutive postseasons—each ending in the first round, including two heartbreaking seven-game losses.

Mosley's work did not go unnoticed. He finished second in the 2024 NBA Coach of the Year voting, trailing only Oklahoma City's Mark Daigneault. It was a testament to the culture he built in a franchise that had only made the playoffs twice (2019 and 2020) since 2012.

Before becoming a head coach, Mosley spent 16 seasons as an NBA assistant with the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks. He grew up in Milwaukee before moving to California at age 13, and his basketball journey has always been rooted in the Midwest.

"We're grateful to Jamahl for all he's done for the Orlando Magic," said Jeff Weltman, the team's president of basketball operations. "We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it's time for a new voice and fresh perspective."

The Magic now enter yet another offseason of uncertainty. For Mosley, the question is whether another NBA team will give him a second chance to build a winner—or if his time in the spotlight has come to an end. For now, the Milwaukee native who helped pull the Magic out of the lottery is left to watch from the sidelines as his former team searches for the next chapter.
